Holy Monastery of Petra
The historic and beautiful Petra Monastery is located northwest of the community Katafygion of Karditsa, within four kilometers of the road leading from the village of Katafygion to Lake Plastiras. Built on the outskirts of Agrafa Mountain, took its name from the rock at which it is located. Northeast of the rock there is a large natural cave. There, according to the tradition, shepherds of the area found the miraculous image of Our Lady Odigitria, work of Evangelist Luke. The Catholic, the only building that survives from the original monastery, is a beauteous church dedicated to the Assumption of Mary and belongs to the four columned type, with beautiful frescoes. In the narthex there is the Chapel of the Transfiguration of Christ. Because of the great Catholic, from an architectural standpoint, the monastery of Petra called “The Parthenon of Agrafon”. Next to the Cathilic, there are the remains of 80-storied cells and underground warehouses destroyed in 1968. There currently resides brotherhood of monks who are in charge of the renovation.
How to get there: There are daily bus routes from Athens, Patra, Thessaloniki, Corinth, Larissa, Volos and Trikala to Karditsa. From Karditsa, there are regular bus routes to the villages of the Lake Plastiras. Karditsa Bus Tel.: +30-24410.21.411, 21.001. From there you can go to the monastery by car.
